Caitlin Doughty is a cool lady with a humorous and informative video series about…death!
As a full-time mortician who has worked in both commercial and alternative burial services, she is definitely an expert on the subject. She is also the founder of The Order of The Good Death, an advocacy group that promotes death acceptance and natural burials. That means turning death into a positive, openly discussed process and skipping environmentally hazardous embalming, burying the body in a way that allows it to decompose naturally. Cool, right? Coming from a country where cremation is the only option, I find all of this very fascinating.
Ms. Doughty’s video series Ask a Mortician covers a wide range of subjects pertaining to death. How do morticians close the mouth of a dead body? Is a viking funeral legal? What’s up with Lenin’s body being on display since 1924? What’s the worst way to die? And RuPaul’s Drag Race fans can check out pre-Drag Race fame Laganja Estranja’s guest appearance on Ask a Mortician.
You might think these videos are too morbid for kids. Yes, but in the video below, Ms. Doughty answers morbid death questions fielded from kids during her book tour for Smoke Gets In Your Eyes: And Other Lessons From The Crematory. Happy Halloween!
