Just in time for the holidays, Spare the Rock Records is releasing a David Bowie tribute album to benefit the It Gets Better Project, a group that focuses on helping LGBT youths. Stacked with family-friendly music notables such as The Pop Ups, Elizabeth Mitchell, Justin Roberts, Red Yarn, and Wunmi as well as Indie rockers Jon Langford (The Mekons) and Walter Martin (The Walkmen), the album focuses largely on songs from Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and Thin White Duke years. Hearing these various artists cover and interpret a host of classic Bowie tunes made me truly appreciate what finely crafted songs these are. The compositions retain their “Made by Bowie” identity yet the songs themselves have enough space and depth to allow the contributing artists to creatively interpret them. Some notable tracks are “Starman” performed by Rachel Loshak with the New Standards and “Fashion” by Wunmi. So get ready to let your children boogie to songs created by an icon who embodied pushing artistic, cultural, and musical boundaries. What better way to spend the holidays!
