Letter From The Editor: Influence

Happy New Year dear readers of Eat The Marshmallow! I do hope it is a good one for us all. Our first issue for 2017 is titled “Influence” because I do not think we realize how much the adult world influences our children for better or worse. As parents, it is our duty to model the behavior we want our children to adopt. Additionally, it is our duty to speak up for what is morally just even if the political and societal tides are turning in a different direction. To kick off our year, Maki and I decided to write a letter to our children, future Nasty Women and Bad Hombres:

Dear future Nasty Women and Bad Hombres,

As your parents this is what we pledge to do: This year, we will focus on kindness. Many of us have been deeply shaken by the vitriolic tone of last year’s election, but it’s important to remember that we are still who we are. And who are we? We are kind, generous, inclusive, intellectually curious people working together to make the world a better place. These are our core values. Let’s remain true to them, now more than ever. We will continue to speak out against systemic racism, homophobia, transphobia and climate change denial. We will not tolerate mistreatment of differently-abled people. We will demand equal access to education. We’ll do what we’ve always done: we will be kind and look out for each other. Let’s get this year started!

Keep fighting the good fight, we think the next generation is worth it,

Maki & Anouck
